There are many things that could stand in your way when you are trying to accomplish a certain reaction from presenting to an audience.
Loss of interest is extremely bad when it comes to presenting but it could be avoided by continuing to be interesting, ignoring minor distractions and reducing the amount of noise produced around the area of the presentation.
Another example to think about is the language you are using, to keep the audience interested you would have to think about who the target audience are and also look at things from a different point of view.
